Presentation delivered by Dr. Angela Wright with accompanying slide deck from MTU event "Research Integrity & Responsible Use of GenAI", November 2024 Munster Technological University.

Abstract

This presentation explores the considerable challenges for research supervisors of postgraduate students in Higher Education within a GenAI environment. The responsibility of research supervision is and will always be onerous; however, now, we are placed in a new and much more challenging, disrupted, expanded environment. The integrity of our supervision and that of our students and future graduates has never been more critical. With the advent of ample search engine opportunities, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technology, and adhering to proper research integrity processes, how can supervisors navigate these complexities.

Doctoral Education in particular, must follow a set of principles and be consistent with European and international standards including the Salzburg Principles, the Salzburg II Recommendations, and Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training. Research excellence is fundamental to quality research and the HEA’s Principles of Good Practice in Research in Irish Higher Education Institutions outlines a consistent framework for HE, while the National Framework for Doctoral Education (NFDE) looks to and supports excellence in Doctoral education in Ireland, providing a set of principles for same; however, the challenges of disruption, keeping pace with Artificial Intelligence and what the future face of excellence will resemble, remain.

Exploring challenges, this presentation draws from theoretical perspectives, experts in the field, and workshops with multi-disciplinary research supervisors and students across MTU setting to inform best practice. Discussions and recommendations will be presented for debate during the presentation.
