Abstract

Physical activity enhances health and quality of life in people with physical disabilities, yet their participation rates remain low in Korea. According to Ryan & Deci (2000), self-determination theory, satisfaction of basic psychological needs fosters autonomous motivation, which is essential for personal growth. Earlier studies have shown that this theory is a robust framework for understanding the links between motivation and physical activity. Recently, mindfulness has gained attention for its role in the relationship between motivation and physical activity (Brown & Ryan, 2003; Schneider et al., 2019). This study aimed to explore the mediating roles of self-determined motivation in the relationship between mindfulness and physical activity intention. A total of 163 people with physical impairments (i.e., spinal cord injury, amputation, stroke) were selected via convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using the State Mindfulness Scale for Physical Activity 2 (SMS-PA2: French, Cox & Huong, 2022), Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-3: Markland & Tobin, 2004; Wilson, Rodgers, Loitz, & Scime, 2006). Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted using SPSS 29.0. Mindfulness positively influenced physical activity intention. In addition, identified, integrated, and intrinsic motivation partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and physical activity intention. Attitude also served as a partial mediator. Mindfulness contributes to the promotion of physical activity participation in individuals with physical disabilities by supporting more autonomous motivation and improving positive attitudes. These findings highlight the need for further research exploring various aspects of mindfulness to better understand its role and potential in improving physical activity and overall well-being within this population.
