Abstract
This work is primarily concerned with the synthesis and characterisation of di and triiron carbonyl cluster derivatives which contain sulphur and phosphine ligands.
The first chapter is a review of the literature of such complexes. Included are diiron carbonyl clusters which contain phosphine ligands, those which contain sulphur, and those that contain phosphine and sulphur ligands. Triiron carbonyl clusters which contain phosphine ligands, sulphur ligands and both are also discussed.
Chapter two describes the synthesis of compounds of the type [{Fe2(SR)2(CO)5)2Ph2P (CH2)nPPh2] (R = phenyl, butyl, propyl) (n = 3,4,6). A total of nine compounds were synthesised by a novel route. They have been characterised by chemical analysis, IR, CNMR, PNMR, Mossbauer and Mass Spectrometry. Three of the compounds have been reported previously albeit by a different route. A comparison of the routes is made. It has been demonstrated that the route described in this work is superior.
The final chapter describes the synthesis of compounds of the type [Fe3S(CO)9L] and [Fe3S2(CO)8L] (L = PPh3, PPhMe2, PPh2Me, P(OMe)3 and PMe3). Compounds of these types have been prepared previously. However, as before, a novel route was used here. The compounds have been characterised by chemical analysis, IR, CNMR, PNMR, Mossbauer and Mass Spectrometry. In addition, the structures of the compounds have been confirmed. X-ray analysis has been conducted on an example of each compound type.
